Most of us have probably had a pair of favourite jeans that scratched up in some inappropriate place. Many are we also that have washed our jeans so that they have lost their elasticy and colour. So how to take care of jeans? Read our experts tips and make your favourite jeans last longer!
Plan your purchases
Avoid impulse buying! What are your needs? First think about what type of jeans fits your body type? What colour or shade can you easily combine with the rest of your wardrobe? Do you like jeans with or without stretch? Try on many pairs until you find a comfortable model and feel free to get help from the staff.
Look at the whole picture, for example the length is easy to adjust afterwards. Once you have found the right pair of jeans for you, they will delight you for many years and not leave unused in the closet.
Wash cold and only when needed
Our advice is to wash as infrequently as possible. Ventilation outside in fresh air, in a humid bathroom or a good steamer is usually enough to freshen up. Use a good clothes brush or stain remover on small stains directly instead of washing the entire garment. Turn the jeans upside down, close the zipper and button and the most important thing is: wash in cold water.
Avoid fabric softener, but feel free to use vinegar, it helps retain the color. Too hot water wears on the jeans and they lose their shape, especially if they contain elastane. Usually 30 degrees is enough. Hang up the jeans to air dry.
Customize
Jeans can shrink in the first wash, so remember to wash before you have your jeans altered. It always pays to have new jeans hem up to the right length, then you minimize the risk of wearing holes in the hem or that folds occur when folded up.
And how fun is it to have jeans that do not fit properly? A sewing atelier with experience with jeans can help you sew into the waist according to your measurements and shorten the length without destroying the original hem.
Jeans worth wearing are worth repairing
When holes occur after regular use, it always pays to repair and thus significantly extend the life of jeans. There are many different types of repair techniques for jeans. Do you like visible patches, hand-embroidered patterns or as invisible repairs as possible?
If you hire a professional sewing studio with experience in jeans, they can help you, for example, repair holes in the crotch with almost invisible results, replace pocket bags with a more durable fabric, change zippers, sew on belt loops that have come loose. We also have an online jeans repair service! Fill out our contact form and tell us how we can help you.
Recycling, Restyling and Recycling
Re-book by passing them on when you no longer use them, exchange with a friend or sell second hand. Are the jeans so worn that the seamstress can no longer patch them together? Maybe they can be restyled to something new, such as a cloth bag? Then recycling remains.
Today, textile and fiber recycling is developing at a rapid pace, but unfortunately only a fraction of the textile waste is still recycled as it is difficult to separate the different materials in the clothes.
