1. Wash new clothes before use
New textiles often contain chemicals and should always pre- washed before use. Unfortunately, allergens and carcinogens such as formaldehyde and phthalates are still used in the textile industry. Clothes can also shrink in the first wash, so remember to always wash the clothes before you leave them to the seamstress to sew on. Help create a positive change, ask for environmental certifications in clothing stores!
2. Follow the washing instructions
When the clothes are not so dirty, it is possible to wash them in cooler than the specified temperature, otherwise the washing instructions should be followed. Garments containing elastane should never be washed in hotter than 30 degrees and should not be tumble dried, as this will reduce the elasticity. Load the machine , wash dark and light clothes seperate and use do not use excess detergent. Liquid detergents are suitable for sensitive materials such as synthetic, wool and silk. Close zippers and turn the clothes upside down to reduce ware. Washing bags is another smart way to solve microplastic realised during washing. The laundry bag also extends the clothes longevity as they wareless. Guppyfriend washing bag is a product that should not pass you by. It save’s you money as you enjoy your favourite clothes for much longer time.
3. Dust off the iron
Did you know that when you iron, the fibers in the garment smoothen out and make it last longer? But, remember to iron clean washed clothes . Stains and odors from dirty clothes can get stuck in and contaminate the clothes. Sensitive fabrics should be ironed on the wrong side. Ironed clothes also look much nicer and give a good first impression. Hand steamer in our store is a dynamic way to give your clothes better feel ! It gives a wrinkle free finish to different kinds of fabrics. It’s size, makes it more convenient to carry it on your business trips, or holiday destinations.
4. Smart storage
When the clothes are in a pile on the floor, the fibers in the fabric breaks. Fibres break down faster than if the storage is hanging or folded. Clothes hanging on a hanger are kept clean and wrinkle-free. Wool sweaters and jumpers should always be fold to avoid them hanging out. When changing seasons, put away clothes that will not be in use for a long time to free up space in the closet. Feel free to add cedar wood that protects the clothes from moths and other pests. 6. Repair
When clothes tear, it is advisable to repair them so that they have a longer lifespan. The longer the garment lasts, the smaller its environmental impact! Store a bag in your closet where you put clean clothes to be repaired or modified. Whenéver you have a garment that has for example, a button coming off, a zipper broken, sleeves that are too long or a hem, that doesn’t sit well on you, put it in a bag. 7. Wash less
We wash too often! Extend life, prevent your clothes from wearing out and losing color prematurely by washing in cooler temperature and less often. Use stain remover on the stain instead of washing the entire garment in the washing machine. Have you tried a stain stick? Steaming or ventilate outside in fresh air or in a humid bathroom is usually enough to freshen up a garment.
8. Stop microplastic with laundry bag
The clothes wear less when washed in a laundry bag and last longer. If your garments contain fleece or other synthetic fiber (such as Softshell or Gore-Tex), use Guppyfriend. The laundry bag collects microplastics that would otherwise go with the washing water out to lakes and streams and thus to microorganisms, waterfowl and fish. Smart stuff, right?
9. Reduce the fabric softener
Fabric softeners soften the laundry and removes electricity but it contains substances that settle in the textile fibers. But, many people are allergic to these chemicals and odors in the fabric softener. Clothes that contain elastic synthetic fibers such as spandex (example, stretch jeans and bras) are easily destroyed by fabric softener, as it breaks down their elasticity. Fabric softener should not be used on towels as it impairs the absorbency. Tumbler Dryer Balls is the best option for softening your clothes without damaging the fabric while removing static elasticity.
10. Wash with vinegar
Use vinegar instead of fabric softener. Vinegar has the same good properties as the fabric softener but does not stick to textiles and does not cause allergies. A bonus is that the vinegar also cleans the washing machine. Make your own by taking 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water. Mix and store in a glass bottle and add a few tablespoons to the rinse aid dispenser when washing. For those of us who are lazy, Fiini Naturally produced laundry vinegar can be bought here. To dissolve old detergent residues, the washing machine should be cleaned by running a 90 degree washing program with vinegar or citric acid in an empty machine at least once a year.
